Contents
This advanced reading course offers Master's students an in-depth study of theorizations of the body in contemporary Anglo-American sociological positions and in more recent theoretical developments from adjacent disciplines and cross-disciplinary research fields. Although the sociology of the body has been widespread in Germany since the 1990s, important contributions to an embodied theory of the social have come from the Anglo-American world. Following Thomas Csordas' assertion that embodiment is "the existential ground of culture and self" (Csordas 1994: 6), sociological theorists like Nick Crossley ("carnal sociology"), John O'Neill ("the five bodies"), Chris Shilling (the body as source, location, and means of society), and others have introduced prominent sociological perspectives. Furthermore, influential theoretical perspectives have been introduced into the sociological discussion from other disciplines and fields of inquiry like anthropology/philosophy (Annemarie Mol – "the body multiple"), posthumanist feminist philosophy (Elisbeth Grosz – "volatile bodies") and the field of "new materialism" more broadly (Rosi Braidotti, Karen Barad). Over the course of the semester, we will engage in close readings of selected works and discuss them comparatively.Course language is English. All reading material will be in English.
