Sociology has long liked to accuse itself of having forgotten the body. This is both true and false. Although the body is indeed not central to the classics of the discipline as a subject of research in its own right, traces of the body can certainly be found in the works of founding figures of the discipline such as Émile Durkheim, Georg Simmel and Max Weber. Since the 1980s at the latest, the sociology of the body has emerged as an independent sociological sub-discipline; in Germany, the sociological investigation of the body has been intensifying since the 1990s.Building on the foundation provided in the introductory lecture on the sociology of the body, this seminar provides an in-depth introduction to foundational texts on the sociology of the body. We will look for traces in the classics, get to know basic terms and concepts and discuss their social-theoretical and sociological-historical backgrounds. In addition to theoretical works, we also take a look at some empirical studies from the sociology of the body that have become canonical.
