Once a marginalized phenomenon, sex has established itself as a subject of sociological inquiry since the 1980s. Today, sociology asserts its responsibility for the sexual, especially in relation to natural science disciplines, by routinely referring to the "social dimension of sex". In this seminar, we will discuss what this social dimension of sex is (discourses? norms? roles? categorizations? interactive scripts?) and thus approach the research field of the sociology of sexuality. We will take a look at its origins and central theories and concepts and reflect upon which conceptions of sexuality it presupposes and uses. We will then explore selected fields of practice to examine various empirical approaches and analytical strategies of sociological sex research. Aspects covered include sexual identity(-ies), forms of deviance, body and gender.Course language is German.
