Contents
Sociology has long been accused—often by its own practitioners—of having forgotten the body. This is both true and false. While the body is indeed not foregrounded as an autonomous object of study in the works of the classical theorists, traces of the body can still be found in the writings of foundational figures such as Émile Durkheim, Georg Simmel, and Max Weber. Since the 1980s, however, a distinct subdiscipline of the sociology of the body has emerged. In Germany, the sociological engagement with the body has gained momentum particularly since the 1990s.Building on the orientation provided in the introductory lecture, this seminar offers a more in-depth engagement with foundational texts in the sociology of the body. We will trace the body’s presence in classical sociology, become familiar with key concepts and theoretical frameworks, and discuss their social-theoretical and disciplinary-historical backgrounds. Alongside theoretical texts, we will also examine several empirically grounded studies that have become canonical within the field of body sociology.
